EndSARS

I am part Nigerian, so EndSARS affects me more deeply than other social protests, as my brothers and sisters are being raped and murdered in Nigeria. SARS has been happening since 2014, however what made SARS a international social problem is when a video went viral showing a SARS officer shooting a man in Delta state. Thus protests were organised peacefully under the hashtag #EndSARS. Which has been used to lead and give a voice for those in Nigeria which are struggling with SARS.

The SARS is a heavily armed police unit formed in 1992 to help combat violent crimes such as armed robberies and carjackings. However has years went by, the government helped make this force corrupted. While it has become the synonymous as the face of police brutality and impunity across the country.

It is essential to note that SARS have been accused of extortion, rape, murder and extrajudicial killings in many cases. However, SARS is not hated by all Nigerians, such as in Northeast parts of Nigeria, where the country has been fighting against a jihadist group “Boko-Haram” for a decade. But the government has claimed that SARS is effective against terrorist groups.

Even though the Nigerian government has continuously denied all allegation against SARS and the massacre of young Nigerian civilians, it isn’t getting all international attention and media coverage it deserves.
